Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about the 2026 TfL Topographical Assessment format and our training program.

What is the pass mark and scoring structure for Topographical?
The overall pass mark is 60% (60 marks out of 100). The exam is divided into two parts:
  • 66 Marks: 3 Digital Route Planning Questions (Short Route, Short Route with Road Closure, and Long Route).
  • 34 Marks: Picture-Based MCQs, True/False questions, Map Symbols/Colors, and 8-Point Compass Directions.
Do I still need to use a physical A-Z Master Atlas book?
No. Physical hardcopy A-Z atlas books are no longer used in official TfL test centres. The assessment is 100% computer-based, and candidates are provided with interactive on-screen digital A-Z map reference pages to answer questions.
How many route planning questions are in the updated exam?
TfL provides 3 route planning questions (down from 4 in older paper tests). You must draw direct routes between green start and red end markers, navigating one-way restrictions, turn prohibitions, and unexpected road closures (e.g. Regent Street or Blackwall Tunnel closures).
What types of questions make up the 34-mark picture section?
The 34-mark picture section includes multiple choice and True/False questions covering:
  • • Map symbols, road classifications (A-roads, B-roads, Motorways), and color codes.
  • • Identifying places of interest, stations, and street names using on-screen map snippets.
  • • 8-Point Compass Direction questions (North, South, East, West, NW, NE, SW, SE).
How long is the assessment and how many attempts do I get?
The official TfL assessment is 70 minutes long. Candidates get 3 attempts — raised from two in TfL's Taxi & Private Hire driver policy v5.0 (20 March 2026). TfL charges £40 for your first attempt and £30 for each resit. If you fail all three you must restart your licence application. Our training packages offer 7 to 30 days of unlimited practice attempts so you can practice until you are 100% confident.
How does route correction and feedback work after I submit a test?
Once you submit a mock test, you immediately see a provisional correct route on-screen to compare directly with the route you drew. Within 24 hours, our expert trainers manually review your drawing line-by-line and send personalized feedback and corrections.
What if I get stuck or confused while drawing a route during lessons?
During lesson practice sessions, you have the option to toggle and view the official correct route on-screen while drawing. This allows you to learn proper turn rules, one-way systems, and road closure bypasses step-by-step whenever you get confused.
How similar is your practice platform to the official TfL test software?
Our digital map simulator is engineered to mirror the exact interface, line-drawing mechanics, compass questions, and map reference layouts used in official TfL assessment centres. You can access your training anytime, anywhere on any device 24/7.
