The core requirements
Meet these four and you can apply. Miss any and TfL will reject your application before they even review the paperwork.
Driving experience
You must hold a full DVLA, Northern Ireland or EEA driving licence that is at least 3 years old. International licence-holders may need to exchange first.
Right to work in the UK
You must have the legal right to live and work in the UK. We verify your passport or share code as part of the application package.
Character & conduct
You must be of "good character". We guide you through the Enhanced DBS check and Update Service registration to meet TfL standards.
Medical fitness
DVLA Group 2 medical standards
To ensure passenger safety, you must meet the same medical standards as heavy-goods-vehicle (HGV) drivers — submitted to TfL on form TPH204.

Skills assessments
Assessments & language
TfL requires every applicant to demonstrate they can navigate the city safely and understand safety regulations — three separate assessments, all at designated TfL centres.
Topographical
Route planning + map skills on the same software TfL uses on test day.
SERU
Safety, Equality and Regulatory Understanding multi-format assessment.
English Language
Speaking & Listening assessment at TfL centres (B1 level minimum).
DBS Check
Enhanced criminal-record check via the DBS Update Service.
